Updates on the Chest

  • Some long overdue updates on the Cedar Chest and Singer projects. The cedar chest is not a problem; ran into where someone along the way painted the base and back of the chest. While stripping the paint I found out why. The original manufacturer made the base out of Poplar with a knot in it, which as the wood dried was falling out. A quick fix of wood filler and paint seemed to be the answer. I ended up replacing the whole corner piece with another piece of poplar. There was

Singer Sewing Machine - Pre 1900's

Repairs completed, parts ordered and cabinet taken apart for finishing. Cedar chest has had the repairs made and just waiting for stripping and finishing.

Singer Cabinet Update


Updates on the Singer sewing machine cabinet. Ran into some issues with the veneer, which was expected, but the mold was not. Ended up stripping more veneer then expected, but all is good. At the point where the drawers are 90 % done and the table tops about 75%. Have to replace veneer on most of the tops and have replaced, or in the process of replacing, the small pieces of veneer that are missing. A long and tedious process.

Update on The Sewing Machine


Finally getting closer to the end. The drawers and the components associated with them are stained. Next id a coat of clear grain filler, then 2 coats of sealer, 5 coats of clear lacquer then a buff job that will make this look like a mirror. The tops are still in the process of getting their veneer replaced but will be completed shortly.
